    Tanah Lot_Bali_Sandra Herd

I just recently got back from my first ever ‘jaunt’ to Bali. Four hours on the plane and we were there in the warmth of Bali leaving the chilly Perth mornings behind.  I actually found it quite difficult shooting in Bali it was a struggled to capture nice light and sunsets were disappointing…actually they were none existent. We’d visited Tanah Lot to get the ‘sunset’ shot but the clouds were thick and grey and alas there was no sunset. The sky turned from grey to dark grey and I thought my photo op had vanished. As we walked over to where the ‘fire dance’ was taking place we passed Batu Bolong Temple just up the beach and I managed to get this shot which I’m actually pretty pleased with.  I only got 2 shots away because we were running late for the show…I would’ve liked ‘softer’ water but was restricted to the 30 second exposure as I had no time to rummage around for my cable and it was pretty much black out there. I managed to focus using the live view function, it’s not the Tanah Lot shot I set out to get but there’s something about this image that I really like.

I’ll be processing more Bali shots for Self Indulged….got a killer sunrise shot from the top of a volcano….the hike to the top in the dark nearly bloody killed me. I’ve decided I need to buy a lighter tripod. I’ve also decided it’s time to get back to the gym!

     Rally

I do believe in my last post I said I would post some images of the rally…..and then September fell into a big hole and in a few days it will be October.

So, here I am playing catch-up with a few photos of the rally….starring Mr Fletcher in the middle shot spruiking on behalf of us West Aussies. Standing up in front of all of those people would put the wind up anybody but he did a fantastic job, especially as Ken Duncan was such a hard act to follow! He conveyed the message that the rules over here in WA seem to be a bit more relaxed…which was true until just this week the council responsible for Cottesloe Beach decided to add a whole heap of new rules. One is the banning of commercial photography without a permit. Hmmm…yes that’s getting old but wanting to ban the flying of kites….well that’s just outrageous! Quick…we need to hold another rally! I LOVE watching kites (just got back from Bali – plenty of kites there and no anti-fun police). And who among us hasn’t squealed in fear and excitement, holding the string as the pointy end spirals out of control at lightening speed towards the top of your head.  Get a grip Cottesloe Council!!

The other news is that the new online mag SELF INDULGED is going great guns!

The rally in Sydney over the weekend AND the launch of my new online magazine SELF INDULGED

The rally seemed to be a huge success, I’ve included an article in my online mag about it along with photos from the day….did I mention that it’s now live?

I’ll be posting some images from the rally before the end of the week but right now I’m off to get some much needed sleep.

    Coral Bay by Sandy@SHOTS

I was in JBs a few days ago and all of the TVs were playing the same amazing footage of our ‘Earth’ from the air and my eyes were glued to the screens. The sound was down but I knew right away whose imagery it was (I’m a big fan of YA-B) so I enquired at the desk and they told me the dvd was called HOME by Yahn Arthus-Bertrand.

I watched it last night…with the sound turned on.

The photography was stunning, the narrative was terrifying.

    Well worth a look!

    Macro Mania by Sandy@SHOTS

Couldn’t resist posting the second bee ;-)

For the past few years there has been widespread concern about disappearing bees…I don’t know too much about it but from what I understand the worry is that pesticides and poisons are killing them off which in turn means there will be no cross pollination of crops which in simple terms means no food! Well, there’s no need to worry. I found the bees! They are all here in Perth…buzzing into my macro shots. Trying to shoot the little buggers without a flash (actually, even with a flash) is hard going and I didn’t actually intend to take any ‘insect’ shots but when they persistently buzzed into my frame the challenge was on.

I’ve been meaning to try the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM lens since I switched to Canon so I hired it for the weekend from Team Digital and took myself off in search of subject matter. I’m guessing my next couple of posts will be the results and hopefully I’ve restored your faith in the future of world agriculture :-)

    Glenelg

A few months ago I was in Glenelg in South Australia on a very stormy evening…I got SATURATED but waited around just in time to catch that light that seems to appear out of nowhere. The sky was almost purple with the dark storm clouds breaking just long enough for some sun to peek through before it finally set. And then…I got saturated AGAIN! I think I need to buy a shamwow for my kit bag :-)

    Images from www.canonmugs.com

While I’m posting ‘quirky’ I thought I’d post these fabulous Canon Lens coffee mugs. They look like great fun as long as you don’t pour your brew into your real 70-200m by mistake….that could be messy!  I reckon I’d have to go for the 70-200 ‘cos I’m a bit of a coffee fiend. Ha! I’m going to get one so that I can measure my coffee intake by lens size ;-)

gsmarena 001 Nikon camera lens thermos is pure awesome

And, as always, Nikon are right there too….at the forefront of coffee technology. Come on Nikon…show us your 200-400m…now that would hold some coffee!!

    Duck

..the first duck orders two whiskeys, the second duck whispers “How are you going to pay?” “It’s all right,” says the first duck, “I’ll get him to put it on my bill.”

I’d forgotten all about this shot and stumbled upon it again by accident – I just love it!  Somewhere on our planet these two little ducks sit in their porthole watching the world go by. The shot was taken in Skagway, Alaska. According to the www.Skagway.com, Skagway made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for Most People Tossing Eggs: 1162….take from that what you will!!

I was there a few years ago (not to toss eggs) and these quirky little guys just caught my eye…hope they bring a smile to your face too.
